How Eureka Eliminated Leakage Problem for a renowned Petro Chemical Company

Background

A renowned company, operating in the oil and petro chemical industry for over three decades, recently faced a major problem of leakage in the Thermocouple installed inside the furnace.

The company relied upon India’s Eureka Engineering Pvt. Ltd., a leading manufacturer and supplier in the field of temperature measurement and control systems. Eureka Engineering ably backed by its expertise and over a decade experience in executing such critical projects, solved the leakage problem with a custom designed new thermocouple for the client.

Challenge

The above mentioned customer of Eureka Engineering major problems of leakage due to very poor construction of thermocouple attached to the furnace. This Thermocouple was used in a furnace to measure very high temperature up to 1400^oC. This Thermocouple was protected by a sheath of re-crystallized alumina-ceramic which is a non metallic tube. This tube with the help of high temperature cement was then attached to SS support pipe.

However, at high temperature and pressure, the gas and fumes present inside the furnace, leak through the porous cement joint and enter the Thermocouple Head and then to environment outside the furnace - which is harmful. To tackle this major problem customer requested Eureka to re-design and innovate a leak proof thermocouple construction design.

Solution

As the problem was associated with leakage it was a challenge to come up with a solution that could eliminate leakage even at high temperatures. Eureka team came up with a Thermocouple design that consists of Rubber O Ring – Gasket with suitable SS Fittings, located in the connecting pipe above Flange.

Result

The new custom designed Thermocouple by Eureka helped the customer totally prevent the gas leakage from the furnace, resulting in hassle free operation.
